Person found dead after fire near Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A person was found dead following a fire at an apartment near Kalamazoo Thursday morning.

The fire broke out before 6 a.m. at Concord Place Apartments off W KL Avenue near US-131 in Oshtemo Township. It was soon doused by firefighters.

They then found that the only person in the apartment was dead, the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office said.

The person’s name was not released later Thursday because family members were still being notified. Police said only that the individual was 69 years old.

The fire is believed to be accidental. Deputies said it looked like the person could not escape in time.

Other people who live in the apartment complex have been allowed to return, deputies say.
