Trees Removed from Former Autoport Site, but Future Development Remains Unclear
A private contractor removed a swath of trees from the former Autoport property in State College on Friday, but if and when the long-dormant site will be developed is still uncertain. Borough planning director Ed LeClear said he was surprised to see Cutting Edge Tree Professionals were clearing trees near the eastern end of the property on South Atherton Street. Centre County Tax Office Warns Residents of Phone Scam
The Centre County Tax Office is warning local residents of fraudulent phone calls falsely claiming tax bills are due. Scammers posing as representatives of the tax office are requesting credit card information over the phone to settle the supposed bills, according to a news release. "The Centre County Tax Office never requests payment or personal information over the phone," the Board of Commissioners Office wrote in a statement. "Residents should be vigilant and cautious if they receive such calls." Official communications from the tax office are typically sent by mail, not unsolicited phone calls. Anyone who receives a suspicious phone call of this nature should hang up immediately and report it to the Centre County Tax Office at (814) 355-6805 and local law enforcement. Colombia native found in Centre County charged with illegal reentry
Centre County, Pa. — A man found in Centre county was charged will illegal reentry into the United States. Moreno Bernal, 42, of Colombia, was indicted by a federal grand jury for illegal reentry into the United States, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. The indictment alleges that Bernal was previously removed from the United States in 2012 and alleges that he was subsequently found in the United States without having first obtained legal permission to reenter the country, according to United States Attorney Gerard Karam. The indictment also alleges that on April 25, law enforcement discovered Bernal in Centre County.
