Iowa schools desegregated 86 years prior to the Brown v. Board of Education decision.Driving the news: Susan Clark, a 12-year-old African American student, wasn't allowed to attend her neighborhood school in Muscatine because it was for "whites only."In 1867, her father, civil rights activist Alexander Clark, filed a lawsuit against the school on behalf of his daughter.He argued the all-white school was next to their home, while his children had to walk over a mile to attend the Black school, PBS reports.The bottom line: Clark won the case, but it was appealed by the Muscatine school board. It rose to the Iowa Supreme Court who ruled in 1868 that racial segregation was unconstitutional.

Pearl City Buckskinners to hold living history rendezvous in Discovery Park
MUSCATINE, Iowa (KWQC) -The Pearl City Mountain Men invite the public to experience the fur trade era of the 1800s and learn more about the history of the mountain man. The 8th annual Pearl City Buckskinners Rendezvous will be held May 17 to 19 at Discovery Park in Muscatine. It is free to attend and the schedule will run 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Moline Breakfast Optimist Club names its 2024 Top Cop
EAST MOLINE, Ill. — The Moline Breakfast Optimist Club is celebrating National Police Week by honoring local law enforcement. The club gave out its annual "Top Cop" award at a ceremony at the Fresh Kitchen in East Moline on Wednesday, May 15. After receiving nominations from the Moline Police Department, East Moline Police Department and the Rock Island County Sheriff's Office, club members whittled the list down to three contenders before finally naming the winner. The recognition ultimately went to Mike Mendoza, deputy sheriff at the Rock Island County Sheriff's Office.
