    13 years later: Remembering the Joplin tornado

    JOPLIN, Mo. — 13 years ago today marks the anniversary of the most devastating tornado in U.S. history. The EF-5 tornado took a direct hit on Joplin at 5:41 p.m. on Sunday, May 22, 2011.

    The tornado caused 161 casualties and 1,000 injuries making it the deadliest tornado on record. In addition to the death toll, Joplin suffered roughly $3 billion worth of damage, making it the costliest tornado on record.

    More than 15,000 vehicles were picked up and carried away. Over 8,000 homes and businesses were destroyed in the storm.

    The tornado was on the ground for 32 minutes. At its largest point, it was over a mile wide.
