Spiva Center opens Studio 55 for older adults

JOPLIN, Mo. (KOAM) -- Spiva Center for the Arts is introducing a new program for people 55 and up.

According to Spiva Center for the Arts, the new program is called Studio 55 and the purpose of the program is to be a vibrant and inclusive art class for adults.

"Through this new program we are focusing on older adults – giving them opportunities to feel the joy of immersing oneself in the process of making," said Heather Lesmeister, Spiva Executive Director.

Every other week, artist Jordan Murdock-Thompson will guide attendees through a range of structured art classes including projects from painting to sculpture. All supplies will be provided.

Spiva Center for the Arts says on alternating weeks, artist Jesse McCormick will lead the program. These sessions will be open studio and offer a more flexible and exploratory approach. Spiva will provide a limited range of supplies to use and experiment with.

"We are striving to engage participants with the arts through opportunities to belong, to learn something new and to feel a sense of accomplishment. This is just the start. We will continue to develop and deliver quality programs of relevance to the fastest growing segment of our society. We are honored to do that at Spiva," said Heather Lesmeister, Spiva Executive Director.
