GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - Two lanes are open on Interstate 75 in Alachua County as crews clean an acid spill following a wreck Thursday morning. Officials say two semi-trucks crashed on I-75 Southbound a couple of miles north of the Northwest 39th Avenue exit in Gainesville. The trucks went off the roadway and into the ditch and struck several trees.
Firefighters extinguish house fire in Gainesville
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - A home in Northwest Gainesville caught fire on Thursday afternoon. Gainesville Fire Rescue (GFR) crews responded to the fire on Northwest 35th Terrace and found fire coming from the first and second floors of the home. Firefighters quickly put out the blaze. Crews say no injuries were reported.

Dump truck crash injures Bell man
A 61-year-old Bell man is in serious condition after his dump truck blew a tire Tuesday and crashed into a tree on State Road 247 in Columbia County. According to a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) release, the man was driving a 1995 Ford LTLS 9000 dump truck south on SR 247 south of SW Allison Terrace at 1:15 p.m. when the left front tire blew out. The truck travelled off the east shoulder where it struck a tree.
Police Presence Upped During Graduations
Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered a heightened police presence on state university campuses during graduation ceremonies last week, according to a top law-enforcement official. DeSantis on Wednesday held a press event at the University of Florida, where he and UF President Ben Sasse touted the school’s commencement ceremonies going off without interruption amid a wave of recent pro-Palestinian campus protests. Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Director Dave Kerner said campus police departments “on countless occasions” have requested the Florida Highway Patrol’s assistance. “I answer a question that I’ve been asked pretty often, which is has the governor personally been involved in directing law enforcement and the Florida Highway Patrol to these events into these university campuses? I answer that question in the affirmative. The answer is yes,” Kerner, whose department includes the highway patrol, said.
Children’s Trust allocates $250K for gun violence
The Alachua County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) and the Children’s Trust of Alachua County (CTAC) discussed literacy and gun violence in a joint meeting on Monday. The Children’s Trust committed up to $250,000 to support community-based anti-gun violence initiatives after a presentation introducing the city of Gainesville’s efforts, as well as a new movement called Cease Violence in the Hood.
