JOHNSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) said a mute swan shot by an arrow in Johnston is expected to survive.

According to the DEM, officers went out looking for the swan Wednesday morning at Oak Swamp Reservoir and found a resident had already removed the arrow.

“Thankfully, it appeared to be a non-fatal superficial wound that the swan should be able to recover from on its own,” the DEM told 12 News.

Anyone with information about who shot the swan should report it to the DEM’s Division of Law Enforcement at (401) 222-3070.

The unlawful killing of a swan can result in a misdemeanor charge which is punishable by a fine of up to $500, up to 90 days in prison, or both.

Rhode Island classifies mute swans as an exotic species. The DEM said the species is “native to Europe and parts of Asia and was introduced into North America as decorative waterfowl for parks, zoos, and private.”
