WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — The man accused of brutally beating a Rhode Island Hospital nurse last fall has been charged again, bringing the total number of active assault cases against him to three.

George Bower, 37, of Johnston, was back in a courtroom in Warwick on Tuesday morning, this time for a bail review hearing. Police said he violated the conditions of his bail from a North Providence assault case after being arrested and charged with simple assault in early March.

Bower appeared in court in handcuffs on Tuesday and is facing charges out of North Providence, Providence, and Johnston.

In the Johnston case, a police report obtained by Target 12 shows Bower is accused of punching a man inside his neighbor’s home. Police say Bower punched the man “multiple times” and then ran off.

Bower’s neighbor said he was in his basement when the suspect entered his house, sat down, demanded money, and started yelling. At this point, the neighbor’s friend tried to calm Bower down, but the 37-year-old punched the man “four to six times on the head,” according to the arrest report.

Police said during the scuffle, the victim was pushed into the wall and then to the floor. A third person in the room told police the attack was sudden and “unprovoked.”

While the man Bower is accused of assaulting refused treatment at the scene, he decided to press charges. The report also noted Bower was in violation of a no-trespass order at the home.

On Tuesday, a judge set Bower’s bail at $1,000 personal recognizance, and he was set free.

As Target 12 previously reported, Bower is accused of attacking Rhode Island Hospital nurse Scott Amaral on Sept. 8, after Amaral tried to calm Bower down. Bower was agitated over the use of a phone , according to police.

Amaral filed a lawsuit earlier this month against the security company Lifespan uses at Rhode Island Hospital.

Amaral claims the company — Allied Universal Security Services — failed to intervene when he was attacked that day.

According to the April 11 civil complaint, two security officers were assigned to the hospital’s inpatient psychiatric unit at the time of the incident.

The complaint alleges seconds before the attack, one of those officers “walked away from the area looking at her cellphone,” and that as the attack went on, “she failed to intervene and did not attempt in any way to restrain” Bower, as he “repeatedly struck” Amaral in the head and body.

“The Allied Universal Security Services officers were untrained, ill-equipped, and unprepared for an incident like this, were ineffective when such an incident arose, were negligent in their failure to prevent the attack, and were negligent in their failure to intervene when [Bower] attacked Amaral,” the complaint said.

The lawsuit also claimed a second officer also witnessed the attack “also failed to intervene.”

“Their employer, Allied Universal Security Services, is responsible for that negligence, both vicariously and directly,” the complaint said.

Amaral suffered significant injuries , according to the court filing, even going into cardiac arrest multiple times after the Sept. 8 attack. He had to be resuscitated several times.

Amaral still suffers from “cardiac-related complications, traumatic brain injury, neurological injuries, and multiple rib/chest wall fractures…” and his medical expenses are approaching $1 million, according to the complaint.

A judge has not yet been assigned to the civil case.

Both Lifespan and Allied Universal Security Services declined to comment on the lawsuit.
