JOHNSTON, Iowa — A fire just past the outfield fence forced a time-out at a baseball game Monday night in Johnston.

Viewer Melissa Krugg sent us a video of the incident at the Johnston High School baseball field behind Johnston Middle School. It shows a small grass fire spreading to a pine tree just beyond the fence of the baseball field.

Chief Jim Clark of the Johnston-Grimes Fire Department tells WHO 13 a call came in at 8:15 p.m. about the fire. It was quickly extinguished once firefighters arrived on the scene.

Clark said the grass fire spread to dry pine needles below the tree and quickly engulfed the tree.

The cause of the fire isn’t known though Clark said it was located just off a walking trail and could have been sparked by an improperly disposed of cigarette.

Firefighters were called back out after midnight because the tree was smoldering.
