The East Tennessee State University Honors College recently announced the newest cohort of Quillen Honors Scholars, a prestigious honor.

“On behalf of the Honors College and the Quillen College of Medicine, I am thrilled to announce the third cohort of Quillen Honors Scholars who will begin at ETSU in the fall,” said Dr. Karla Leybold, QHS program director. “The selection process was extremely competitive this year, yielding an outstanding group of incoming pre-med honors scholars who will become part of the next generation of physicians serving Appalachia and beyond.”

The following area high school seniors have been selected for the next Quillen Honors Scholars cohort:

    • Drew Ballard of Gray; Providence Academy
    • Kampbell Darnell of Englewood; Central High School of McMinn County
    • Dani El Minaoui of Jonesborough; Science Hill High School
    • Ahmad El-Messidi of Knoxville; Farragut High School
    • Lucy Franks of Newport; Cocke County High School
    • Sophia Gouge of Jonesborough; David Crockett High School
    • Kenley Green of Johnson City; David Crockett High School
    • Hank Hope of Greeneville; Greeneville High School

    • Shreya Priyadarshi of Nashville; Harpeth Hall School
    • Macy Reid of Kodak; Northview Senior Academy
    • Macy Shell of Johnson City; Science Hill High School

The cohort represents a variety of majors offered at ETSU, including biology, public health, kinesiology, health sciences and psychology.

The Quillen Honors Scholars program was founded in 2022, guaranteeing five participating students admission to the Quillen College of Medicine upon graduation. All of the students in the program receive a scholarship and a variety of travel opportunities, both nationally and abroad, to see concepts from the classroom applied in a real-world setting and to meet and network with Quillen alumni.

Past trips include New York City, Denver and various cities in the United Kingdom.

ETSU students regularly earn prestigious scholarships, and the university has signaled a new commitment to helping students compete for competitive awards both in the United States and abroad.

Earlier this year, for example, student Trent White won the elite Truman Scholarship .
