    FROM STAFF REPORTS

JOHNSON CITY — A tragic two-vehicle crash occurred just before midnight on April 28, prompting a response from officers of the Johnson City Police Department. The incident occurred on Interstate 26 at Exit 17 and involved a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction colliding head-on with another vehicle.

The driver of the wrong-way vehicle sustained serious injuries and was rushed to an area hospital for treatment. Tragically, the driver of the other vehicle, identified as Austin Teagarden, 27, of Knoxville, succumbed to injuries at the scene.

In the aftermath of the crash, eastbound lanes of Interstate 26 spanning from exits 13 to 17 were closed for several hours, disrupting traffic flow. As of now, the lanes have been reopened to traffic.

Responding to the scene were personnel from the Johnson City Fire Department, Washington County/Johnson City EMS, Tennessee Highway Patrol, and Tennessee Department of Transportation, who provided assistance and support.

Charges are pending against the driver of the vehicle traveling in the wrong direction. The Johnson City Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Team is actively investigating the incident and pledges to release further information as it becomes available.
