JCPD joins National Prescription Drug Take Back Day to promote safe medication disposal

The Johnson City Police Department (JCPD) is partnering with Insight Alliance and East Tennessee State University’s Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 27. The initiative, organized by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible way for the community to dispose of unused medications.

JCPD Chief Billy Church stresses the importance of proper medication disposal, highlighting the risks associated with unused prescription drugs. By participating in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, JCPD is taking proactive steps to remove potentially harmful substances from communities and promote public safety.

The event will be held at the Municipal and Safety Building parking lot, located at 601 E. Main St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants can drive up to the collection site and drop off medications without leaving their vehicles.

It’s encouraged to go through all medications and bring expired, unused, or unneeded drugs to National Drug Take Back Day. However, collection sites will not accept syringes, needles, or illegal drugs. Liquid products, such as cough syrup, should remain sealed in their original containers with the caps tightly sealed to prevent leakage.

For those unable to attend the event, JCPD offers year-round prescription drug disposal services at their headquarters, located at 601 E. Main St., Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
