Firefighters arrived at 290 Webster Ave and found a working fire in an apartment on the third floor, which caused extensive damage, Kimberly Wallace-Scalfione, a spokeswoman for the mayor's office said.

Six adults were relocated by the Red Cross, Wallace-Scalfione said. One woman in a basement apartment was treated and transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation, Wallace-Scalfione said. Two cats were removed and revived by firefighters, Wallace-Scalfione said.

Two fundraisers have been set up to support those displaced by the fire.

Samira Abdelmalak, her family, and her two cats lost their possessions in the fire and face an "overwhelming" financial burden, Yomna Hamed, who organized the fundraiser said. As of Thursday, April 18, more than $8,000 has been raised. Money raised will go toward helping them secure temporary housing, replacing essential belongings and helping them rebuild their lives, Hamed said.

Albamaria Escalante set up a fundraiser after she lost everything in the fire. As of Thursday, April 18, almost $6,000 has been raised.

"We are currently displaced and need to find a new living situation as our home is condemned," Escalante said. "The insurance people and others have stated that the process may take a year or more. Your continued support is appreciated beyond words can express."
