JERSEY CITY, NJ- Jersey City has moved to acquire a portion of waterfront walkway to better maintain it after a cyclist had an accident on it last year.

At its April 10 meeting, the Jersey City Municipal Council unanimously introduced an ordinance that would see the City take ownership of the property from the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency (JCRA) and maintain it as part of the Hudson River Walkway.

Ward E Councilman James Solomon explained that there is no building on the premises, just the walkway, but that the property was still in possession of the JCRA. He said the revelation was prompted by an accident on that stretch of the walkway, and thus led to the proposed change.

“About a year ago, a constituent had a bike accident on the walkway and reached out to us, because the boards… they were spaced improperly and they fell,” Solomon.

Solomon said that after the City learned that the JCRA still owned the property, they felt that it was better for the property to come under the City’s ownership. That way, the City could maintain it and prevent further injury.

“So that we could then go basically fix it,” Solomon said.

JCRA Project Manager Jason Friedkin then confirmed what Solomon was saying, adding that the walkway is better off in City hands.

“It’s really just a portion of the walkway that’s for the most part owned by the City,” Friedkin said. “So we kind of just want to make it contiguous and have them take over ownership.”
