Baxley brothers lead Wesleyan to Senior Night win over Temple

PEACHTREE CORNERS — Wesleyan defeated Temple 41-20 on Friday, closing out its regular football season with a victory on Senior Night behind strong performances from senior twin brothers Kyle Baxley and Beck Baxley, who each recorded more than 110 all-purpose yards. The Wolves (7-3) controlled much of the game offensively, scoring in all four quarters to secure their sixth win in their last seven games. Wesleyan entered the matchup at 6-3 overall and 4-2 in Region 5-AAA play after a 14-7 road win against KIPP. Temple (3-7) entered at 3-6 overall and 2-4 in region play following a 55-13 loss to Lovett. Wesleyan opened the scoring on its first possession with a 2-yard touchdown run by senior quarterback Jameson Hilton. Temple responded with a 31-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Brody Dempsey to senior Devin Tanner, tying the game at 7-7. The Wolves quickly regained the lead after recovering a Temple onside kick. Hilton connected with senior wide receiver Quin Brown and senior wide receiver Gabe Allen to move the offense downfield before Kyle Baxley finished the drive with a 5-yard touchdown, putting Wesleyan back up 14-7. Windsor Academy is officially heading to the state championship game, and the Knights wasted little time making sure of it, steamrolling the Robert Toombs Christian Academy Crusaders 57-8 to punch their ticket. Behind five rushing touchdowns from senior quarterback Heath Woodard in the first half and another explosive performance from sophomore running back Jaquan Lewis, top-seeded Windsor dominated the No. 4-seeded Crusaders right from the opening kickoff. The Knights improved to 10-1, extending their winning streak to 10 games, while the Crusaders finished their season 0-11. “They’ve been a great two-headed monster,” Windsor head coach Dylan Bass said of Woodard and Lewis. Windsor’s offense struck immediately after RTCA came up short on a fake punt. On the Knights very first possession of the game, Lewis burst into a near 70 yard run that got his unit all the way to the 5-yard line. Woodard, who came into the contest leading the Knights in rushing touchdowns, showed off his impressive speed as he raced around the right edge for the opening touchdown. After years of searching for affordable health insurance, Trey Wright discovered Georgia Pathways to Coverage. The state’s limited Medicaid expansion program allowed the 27-year-old living in the rural city of Jesup in southeastern Georgia to finally visit a primary care doctor regularly. It also covered weekly shots to manage an array of allergies, saving him more than $1,700 a year in out-of-pocket costs, he said.

Shaw beats Monroe to secure Georgia high school football state playoff berth

The Shaw Raiders (5-5, 3-5) are back in the Georgia High School Association football state playoffs for the first time since 2024. They defeated Monroe 12-8 (2-8, 2-5) Thursday night at Kinnett Stadium in Columbus. Monroe got on the scoreboard first on a 77-yard run by sophomore running back Carter Hudson, and they converted on the two-point conversion to go up 8-0. Shaw responded when sophomore quarterback Daylen Peterson scored on a quarterback keeper, but the Raiders failed on their two-point try. After the first quarter, Monroe led Shaw 8-6. In the second quarter, Monroe was driving down the field and was stopped by the Shaw defense at the 8-yard line. Shaw moved the ball to the other side of the field when the Raiders converted on a third-and-18 as Peterson connected with junior wide receiver Marquell Charleston for a 35-yard gain that put the Raiders at first-and-goal. But failed to score as Monroe’s defense made a goal-line stop. Monroe flipped the field and moved the ball to the 50-yard line but was forced to punt. Flu activity low locally as health officials urge holiday precautions

The peak of flu season is still weeks away, but Northwest Georgia health officials are encouraging residents to take precautions now as colder temperatures and holiday gatherings increase opportunities for the virus to spread. Dr. Gary Voccio, district health director for Northwest Georgia Public Health, said flu activity typically peaks in January and February, and he expects cases to increase locally as the region moves closer to winter. “We are seeing numbers increase slightly, although our numbers here in Northwest Georgia are minimal,” Voccio said. Although local flu activity remains relatively low, Georgia has already recorded influenza-related hospitalizations, outbreaks and deaths this season, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health. During the week ending Oct. 24, the state reported two influenza-associated deaths and seven flu outbreaks, while an eight-county metro Atlanta surveillance area recorded 47 hospitalizations. Since the season began in early October, Georgia has recorded seven influenza-associated deaths and 21 outbreaks. The metro Atlanta surveillance area, which does not include Floyd County, has recorded 164 hospitalizations. The state also reported that 2.6% of outpatient visits during the week ending Oct. 24 involved influenza-like illnesses, below the regional baseline of 3.2%.
