Kennesaw Mountain educator makes an impact through sign language and football
At Kennesaw Mountain High School, Diana Jarvis serves students in three roles: American Sign Language instructor, Director of Operations for Mustangs football and interpreter for Deaf athletes. Through each role, she helps build connections, foster inclusion and ensure every student can succeed. Jarvis joined Cobb County School District six years ago through its HOPE (Helping Outstanding People Everyday) Program, which supports students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing or have visual or orthopedic impairments. After four years at Kennesaw Mountain, she began teaching ASL this school year, bringing hearing and Deaf students together through a shared language. Her connection to Mustangs football began when she interpreted for a Deaf senior during his final season. Wanting to continue supporting the team, she approached Head Coach Caleb Carmean, who helped her find a role in the program. Today, as Director of Operations, Jarvis helps manage daily responsibilities so coaches can focus on developing their players. “She is a tireless worker and has a positive attitude in everything she does,” Carmean said. “Her impact on the daily operations of our program is immeasurable.” One of Jarvis’ most meaningful contributions is supporting sophomore linebacker Larenzo Parker, helping him communicate with coaches and teammates

‘This is Georgia’s most solvable problem’: Literacy chairman visits Marietta students
As Georgia works to improve its struggling literacy rates, Georgia Council on Literacy Chairman Scott Johnson brought that mission to the classroom, reading to students at First Presbyterian Church of Marietta’s Club 3:30 after-school program. Johnson read two books written by former Georgia football player and Super Bowl champion turned-children’s author Malcolm Mitchell — “Hey, Georgia,” co-authored with Georgia first lady Marty Kemp, and “My Very Favorite Book in the Whole Wide World.” Johnson’s animated delivery went over well with the class. Club 3:30 serves students from kindergarten through fifth grade and provides after-school tutoring, homework help and activities for children every weekday. There are currently 26 students in the program, all of whom attend Hickory Hills Elementary and are of Guatemalan descent. The program is open to elementary school students of all backgrounds. Johnson is a member of the Georgia Board of Human Services and principal owner of business and government consulting firm Southern Strategic Solutions, in addition to his role on the Georgia Council on Literacy. He is also the former Cobb County GOP chairman and the Republican nominee for the Georgia State Senate in 2022. The Georgia Council on Literacy is a 30-member state body created in

South Gwinnett scores 44 unanswered points to race past Archer
SNELLVILLE — South Gwinnett head football coach Bryan Lamar stood on the sidelines anxiously waiting for his team to wake up. After a forgettable start to the Comets’ Region 4-AAAAAAA opener on Friday night, Lamar’s team locked in — and then some. South Gwinnett finished with 44 unanswered points en route to a 52-21 rout of Archer, marking the Comets’ first four-game winning streak since a 4-0 start to the 2023 season. They improve to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the region, while Archer falls to 4-4 and 0-2. Even following the impressive second-half showing, Lamar knows his team has to start better playing in one of the state’s best regions. “We weren’t focused to start the game,” said Lamar, whose team allowed 21 points in the game’s first six minutes and trailed by 13. “Archer has good players and an excellent coaching staff, and our kids just came out here like they were just going to roll over people, and that’s not the way it works. We’re not that kind of team. We’re not talented enough to be able to just show up out here and just beat people. “If we’re not focused, we’re going to struggle. It took
