Janesville Craig keeps its cool after going behind early, rallies for 2-1 win at East Troy

There was no panic in Janesville Craig’s girls soccer team when it fell behind East Troy in the second minute of Tuesday’s nonconference road game.

The Cougars maintained their composure, kept the pressure on the Trojans and eventually were rewarded in the second half with a pair of goals and a come-from-behind 2-1 win.

”Conceding that early is not what we want to do, but it didn’t change anything about our approach to the game,” Craig coach Casey Berg said. “They might’ve raised their urgency a little bit, but I didn’t want us to panic or rush.”

East Troy got to halftime still with its lead, but Craig turned it around early in the second half.

After winning a tackle in its defensive end, Craig moved the ball out wide to Lily Campbell, who found freshman Nova King in the box. She scored from close range to tie the game in the 47th minute.

About 20 minutes later, Mia Pietranton, Grace Mannion and Macy Huber combined to score the game-winning goal.

Pietranton had the ball at the top of the 18-yard box, then distributed it wide to Mannion. She found Huber in the box, and the junior was able to shoot up and over the East Troy goalkeeper.

“Tonight was not our best night, but we still won,” Berg said. “Sometimes it’s not pretty, but they got the job done in the second half.”

Craig will return home and to Big Eight play at 7 p.m. Thursday against Madison La Follette.
