Little change in Linn County leadership after Tuesday election

CEDAR RAPIDS — District 2 Supervisor Sami Scheetz has secured his first full term on the Linn County Board of Supervisors after securing 66% of the vote on Tuesday’s ballot. Scheetz, 30, bested Republican challenger Rex Meyer to represent Linn County’s 2nd District, which covers eastern Cedar Rapids and portions of Hiawatha. The district has been represented by a Democrat since its creation in 2018 when the board went from five members to three. Scheetz, of Cedar Rapids, was appointed to the District 2 spot last year after the departure of former Supervisor Ben Rogers, a fellow Democrat who resigned in early 2025. Tuesday’s win sets him up for a full four-year term. “It’s wonderful to have a public mandate directly from constituents and residents,” he said. “I’m grateful that (voters) think my first year and half has gone well and that they’re putting their trust in me to continue to serve them with a full term.” Scheetz previously told The Gazette his top three priorities if re-elected would be protecting county services during future budget cycles, supporting “responsible” growth and future land use, and strengthening the social safety net for county residents.
