Visalia City Council weighs ban on new data centers
The Visalia City Council voted unanimously on Aug. 17 to decide at a future meeting whether to place a moratorium on data centers in the city. The possible moratorium “would prohibit the development and approval of data centers and similar high intensity uses with significant water net loss and electrical demands,” according to the motion made by Councilman Brian Poochigian. Other options the city council could consider at a future meeting include amendments to the city’s zoning ordinance or development standards, referring the matter to the Visalia Planning Commission for a recommendation, or a temporary moratorium. Additionally, data centers are known to consume a large amount of local electricity and water , which results in higher utility bills in the area. They are also known to create air and water pollution issues, such as the emission of fine particulate matter. They're noisy. They're unpopular: Should data centers be banned? Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. stopped in Atwater on Thursday to announce that Castle Family Health Centers will receive $650,000 in federal grant funding and be upgraded to full Federally Qualified Health Center status, part of a nationwide $102 million push to expand primary care access. The visit put a spotlight on a Merced County clinic that has spent 16 years operating under a lesser federal designation, even as California lawmakers and hospital leaders warn that far larger federal health care cuts are squeezing the state's safety net.
