Powerboat races continue in Marathon
Race World Offshore APBA National Series Season Opener: The 7-Mile Offshore Grand Prix continues this weekend in the waters off of Marathon. The 7-Mile Offshore Grand Prix, will run through April 28th and bring together top-tier racers and teams from across the world to compete in a high-speed showdown on the open waters of the Florida coastline. Spectators can expect heart-pounding action, adrenaline-fueled races, and a festive atmosphere that celebrates the spirit of competition and camaraderie. Grassy Key lived up to its tagline as “the place to be” to celebrate Earth Day in Marathon. Reviving its Mural Fest for the first time in three years, the Lagoon on Grassy Key celebrated mother nature with two days of live music, a board sports extravaganza, a mangrove cleanup and the reopening of the park’s Saloon Surf Shoppe. As promised by owner Matt Sexton, renowned artists from throughout Florida spent the weekend overhauling “every paintable surface,” at the Lagoon, bringing fresh creations of flamingoes, undersea scenes, abstract pieces and more to life.
FINS BASEBALL HEADED TO CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP
Marathon’s boys baseball team improved its win streak to five last week, thanks to a trio of wins in an end-of-season run toward district playoff action. The Fins defeated Somerset South Homestead 15-1 on April 15, aided by 3 hits from junior catcher Gabe Leal. Dylan Ziels and Jack Chapman had a pair of hits each and Aidan Gonzalez, Dylan Williams, Leo Mendez and Tiago Rivero accounted for the rest. Rivero’s hit was an inside-the-park home run off a massive line drive, scoring 2 runs for Marathon. Mason Thornton only needed 5 innings on the mound to seal the win, striking out 5, walking 4 and allowing 3 hits from Somerset.
FLORIDA KEYS EATS: DJ’S CLAM SHACK IS A CASUAL KEYS VIB
Did you know Maine is a few hours south of Key Largo? That’s what my taste buds think at least. DJ’s Clam Shack sits right on a piece of prime property on Duval Street in Key West. Their mantra is “Where northern and southern seafood meet,” and that couldn’t be more on point. I’ve personally eaten my way through the northeast multiple times. I’ve spent weeks on the road eating lobster … ahem … I mean “lobstah” rolls, one after another from Montauk to Mystic Seaport, through Cape Cod all the way to Maine.

Homestead Man Charged in Robbery and Assault of Teen in Key Largo
A Homestead man faces charges after allegedly robbing a teen in Key Largo, authorities said. Shayvon Cortavius Givens, 20, is accused of assaulting and robbing a 14-year-old boy of jewelry worth over $3,200. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office reports the incident occurred in June 2023, when Givens allegedly punched the victim multiple times before taking the jewelry.
