Somerset County at its peak of brilliant fall colors
Cooler weather has advanced the fall color in Somerset County according to foresters in Forbes State Forest, which serves Allegheny, Washington, Greene, Westmoreland, Fayette and Somerset counties. Recent cold nights helped to develop autumn shades that are showcased across most of Pennsylvania’s forests. The best places to see the colors of autumn in Penn's Woods are the northern tier counties, the northern Poconos and the Laurel Highlands, according to the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Foresters reported that cooler weather has rapidly advanced fall color, especially in the higher elevations of the Laurel Highlands. Black gums are at their peak seasonal reds and burgundies, while some are dropping their leaves. Sugar and red maples are glowing yellow, orange and red. Birches are showing golden yellow and dropping leaves, while yellow poplar is displaying shades of yellow. Oaks remain mostly green, while a few are beginning to show reds and browns, according to the DCNR website. Visitors looking to enjoy the earliest peak color of the season should focus on southern Somerset County near Somerset, Berlin and Meyersdale, where peak color is developing.
