Safety issues flagged at Palisades as nuclear plant preps for restart

Federal nuclear regulators have documented a series of recent safety incidents at the Palisades Nuclear Plant in west Michigan as its owner strives to make it the nation's first nuclear plant to resume operations after a shutdown. Workers were exposed elevated levels of airborne radioactivity at the plant in February, according to an August inspection report from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the federal panel that oversees the nation's nuclear fleet. A fuel rod tipped to an improper 30-degree angle when workers were reloading it in August. Palisades owner Holtec is using an unconventional system involving cranes and slings to move it into the spent fuel pool, according to documents filed with the NRC. Most recently, the NRC reported that workers at the plant's supply chain and quality assurance departments told regulators they are hesitant to raise safety issues and other concerns to managers or the NRC. "The problems that have arisen so far are possibly indicative of a pattern of poor management and inattention to safety concerns, or at worst putting a quick restart ahead of safety," said Edwin Lyman, a physicist and director of nuclear power safety for the Union of Concerned Scientists, a nonprofit science advocacy organization

Study: Michigan ranks ninth-lowest in self-employment tax participation

(The Center Square) – A new study found Michigan ranks one of the lowest states nationally for self-employment tax participation. Self-employment tax covers Social Security and Medicare contributions for self-employed individuals, including sole proprietors and independent contractors. Michigan had 578,920 self-employment tax filers out of 4,872,330 total returns. The average self-remitted tax was $4,699.51 per return, according to the study. “Every year, millions of Americans send money directly to the IRS through estimated payments, payments filed with their returns, and self-employment tax obligations. These are not taxes withheld by an employer; they are dollars individuals calculate and remit on their own,” the report said. “Michigan stands out as a state where this self-remitted tax burden is notably light, ranking among the ten lowest states in the share of filers paying self-employment tax.” The new 50-state analysis found that just 11.88% of Michigan filers pay self-employment tax, ranking it the 9th lowest nationally. Only eight states rank lower, led by West Virginia at 9.36%, Wisconsin at 10.56% and Pennsylvania at 11.11%. Michigan also trailed neighboring states like Illinois, where participation was 12.78%, and Minnesota, at 12.47%. The 800,000-square-foot facility will add capacity and operational flexibility as the company invests to support its growth and the evolving needs of health care providers across all points of care. "This investment in Van Buren Township reflects Medline's continued focus on strengthening our Michigan distribution network and investing in our people," said Billy Abrams, executive vice president of supply chain solutions at Medline.
