Pickup truck fire at Holland and Lyons Mortuary Monday
On Monday afternoon, Ridgecrest Police and Kern County Fire were dispatched to report a vehicle fire in the parking lot of Holland and Lyons Mortuary in Ridgecrest. On arrival, the Police deployed a dry chemical fire extinguisher, which did not affect the fire. Firefighters deployed a 1-inch hard hand line to extinguish the front of the vehicle and minimize the fire in the shrubs beside it. Firefighters utilized the rotary saw to gain access to the engine compartment. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is unknown.
China Lake Museum Foundation to hold annual dinner/auction May 18
The China Lake Museum Foundation invites the community to join them on May 18 for an evening of food and fun at its 22nd annual dinner and auction to be held at the Kerr McGee Center. Cerro Coso Community College 2024 graduation ceremony
On Friday, May 10th, Cerro Coso Community College held its 50th Annual Commencement ceremony for the graduating class of 2024. The ceremony was held inside Dr. Raymond A McCue Athletic Complex where family and friends of the graduating class could see their student walk up and receive their diploma from Cerro Coso. Before handing out diplomas, Dr. Sean Hancock, President of Cerro Coso, spoke to the graduating class and they had two student speakers in Fatima Chavez Gomez and Lacy Roberts.
SSUSD selects Marina Amador new principal at James Monroe
Sierra Sands Unified School District (SSUSD) Bryan Auld, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources– Marina Amador has been selected as the next James Monroe Middle School. (“Monroe”) Principal. Marina was selected as a result of a competitive hiring process that included multiple interviews. The SSUSD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve her selection at a Special Board Meeting held on Wednesday, May 1, 2024. Marina will officially begin her tenure as Monroe’s principal on July 1, 2024. Marina will replace Amy Self, the current Monroe principal, who is leaving Monroe to serve as the Director of Human Resources.
Council to approve rate increase for trash service
At the next city council meeting for May 15, council will be presented with a resolution for approval of the fiscal year 2024-25 rate adjustment request for solid waste services. City Manager Ron Strand will present the resolution for a rate increase effective July 1 as follows:
SSUSD hires Jeff Moore as Dir. of Facilities
Sierra Sands Unified School District (SSUSD)—Jeff Moore has been selected to fill the newly created Director of Facilities position. The SSUSD Board of Trustees unanimously approved his selection on Wednesday, May 1, during their Special Board Meeting. Jeff, who lives and works in Fontana, currently works as a real estate broker. He has decades of experience working in industries directly related to construction project management.

The Ridgecrest United Methodist Church (RUMC) invites you to a free Mother’s Day Luncheon following their 9:30 a.m. worship service in the social hall located at 639 North Norma. HSUMD annual dinner/meeting set for May 21
The Historical Society of the Upper Mojave Desert’s Annual Dinner Meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 21, at 6 pm, at the Historic USO Building, 230 W. Ridgecrest Blvd., with doors opening at 5:30. The program will be a follow-up to April’s “Wedding of the Waters” program, a video presentation of Huell Howser’s 1999 recreation of the event. There will also be an election of officers and other business. A tri-tip dinner will be provided by HSUMD members Joe DePina, Tammy Pounds, and Norma Abbott, and served by the High Desert Quilt Guild (who will also provide desert). Tickets will sell for $20 and will be available for sale at the HSUMD Book Store on Wednesdays through Saturdays from 11 am to 3 pm.
CCCC students make PTK All-California Academic Team
Cerro Coso Community College (CCCC) Jessica Weston– Two Cerro Coso Community College students have been named to the 2024 Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) All-California Academic Team. Kaleb McClendon from the Ridgecrest campus and Dean Mabrey from the Online campus, two remarkable individuals, were among the 122 college students chosen for this year’s awards. Their journey, marked by dedication and hard work, has led them to join some of the best of the two million students in California’s 116 community colleges.
Coyotes baseball hold awards and signing ceremony
Cerro Coso Gym was the site for the Cerro Coso baseball team to hold its awards and signing ceremony for the previous season. Head Coach Justus Scott conducted the ceremony that included Assistant Coach Ryan Cantrell, Cerro Coso Community College President Sean Hancock, Athletic Director John McHenry, and the members of the Coyotes baseball team.
