Voyageurs sweep Norse baseball over the weekend

VIRGINIA—The Minnesota North-Mesabi Range baseball team fell short in a pair of doubleheaders to Minnesota North-Rainy River over the weekend.

On Saturday, the Norse hosted the Voyageurs and fell 3-2 in the first game and then 13-7 in the second game of the doubleheader.

On Sunday in International Falls, the Norse fell 11-0 in the first game of the day and then 2-0 in the series finale.

In Saturday’s opener, Will Bittmann took the loss on the mound for the Norse, giving up three runs (all earned) on eight hits and a walk. He struck out three over seven innings in the complete game effort.

At the plate, Josh Summers was 1-2 with two RBIs. Cameron Pietrusa was 2-4 with two runs scored. Isaiah Birt was 2-3.

In game two, Sam Sigurdson took the loss for the Norse, giving up seven runs (two earned) on nine hits and a walk. He struck out four over five innings of work. Landin Heinlen pitched the final two innings, giving up six runs (all earned) on seven hits and three walks. He struck out one.

Pietrusa finished the game at the plate going 2-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. ELijah Mack was 2-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.

In game three, the Norse could only muster up one hit from Colton Comstock in the loss.

On the mound, Hunter Twete took the loss, giving up 11 runs (10 earned) on seven hits and five walks. He struck out two over 3.2 innings. Landin Heinlen pitched the final third of an inning in the five-inning loss, giving up a hit.

In the final game of the series, Brodie Vining pitched a complete game for Mesabi Range and took the loss, giving up two runs (both earned) on four hits and four walks. He struck out three over six innings.

Mack finished 2-2 at the plate. Summers and Kenny Randt both collected a hit.

The Norse return to action on Saturday when they host Northland in a doubleheader starting at noon. They’ll travel to Northland the following day for another doubleheader.
