Construction on Indio Sports Park to begin this week

The City of Indio is hosting the official groundbreaking ceremony for the Indio Sports Park on Wednesday, May 1 at 3 p.m.

The park will feature a walking trail, an event center, shaded areas, baseball, softball, soccer and football fields.

Indio resident and the Vice President of the Indio Youth League , Marcella Zamudio-Walls, said the new park could open doors for the young athletes she coaches.

“It's really exciting to know that we're going to be able to expand. We're going to be able to offer this for more children to come out and play more games. And we're also hopefully able to bring people down here to the Coachella Valley and host tournaments," said Zamudio-Walls.

Indio Councilmember Waymond Fermon said the park will provide a much-needed economic boost for the city.

"It's been in the conversation for decades in this community. So that just validates the long standing interest in the community…it will stimulate the economy in this area, providing jobs and possibilities for business and local entrepreneurs," said Fermon.
