FARMERSBURG, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Indianapolis Zoo is excited to announced the grand opening of the International Chimpanzee Complex.

The complex will officially open on Memorial Day Weekend.

Indianapolis Zoo Public Relations Specialist Cody Mattox said the complex spans about 9,600 square feet. An overhead trail that runs about a quarter of a mile long connects three buildings in the complex.

The first building is the Community hub where chimpanzees interact with each other and their environment. The next building is the Cognition Center where guests will see chimpanzees interact with various games. The third building of the complex is called the Culture Center, where guests will learn more about the species.

“How they live in the wild and how this complex sort of recreates that functional naturalism of life in the wild, and it’s to really allow chimpanzees to be chimpanzees, and I think that’s something very significant for us,” Mattox said.

The Indianapolis Zoo has 21 chimpanzees. You can learn more about the complex and the other animals at the zoo on its website here .
