INDIANAPOLIS — A person is dead after a road rage incident on Interstate 65 possibly led to gunfire and a car crashing into a pond.

According to Indiana State Police, troopers are investigating a fatal car crash incident Wednesday afternoon on the southeast side of Indianapolis. ISP Sgt. John Perrine said the crash was on Interstate 65 near County Line Road.

ISP said that 911 dispatch began receiving calls in the early afternoon that a road rage incident on 65 North had led to gunfire. Simultaneously, police got reports of a car that had run off the roadway and crashed into a pond.

According to ISP, the driver of the car that crashed into the pond was ejected before hitting the water. That driver was pronounced dead on scene.

ISP said that, within minutes, ISP and IFD divers were in the water to search for more victims. However, no one was found and troopers do not believe anyone else was in the car.

Police clarified that at this time it is not confirmed whether the road rage calls and the crash are connected and that it is a “complex scene.” Emergency responders, police and crash reconstruction crews are all on scene to gather information.

INDOT online updates show that two right lanes of I-65 northbound are closed in the area north of Greenwood. ISP confirmed that construction crews working on the interstate were in the area at the time of the crash.

Many evidence markers can be seen on scene, although it is not known what evidence has been gathered. No other information was immediately provided by police and an update is not expected from ISP until later in the evening Wednesday.
