A 9-year-old police dog named Maverick has officially retired after serving Indiana for over eight years.

Maverick, a Shephard and Malinois mix, was selected to be a police dog for the Indianapolis District in 2016, according to a press release by the Indiana State Police.

Since then, Maverick has been working with his partner Sergeant Susan Rinschler.

During his time as a K9 unit, Maverick regularly assisted the Indiana State Police Special Weapons and Tactics team with building searches. He also helped the U.S. Marshals Service apprehend violent felons and the U.S. Postal Service seize several hundred pounds of illegal narcotics and drug money.

After becoming an honorary member of the Indianapolis Postal Inspectors, Maverick assisted the Fishers Police Department on a drug task force where he was responsible for the team’s first money seizure.

Maverick then worked with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s Violent Crime Reduction Team to locate narcotics and aided in vehicle pursuits.

Additionally, he has assisted the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Agency, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in their District 52 investigations.

Maverick has attended community events, showing off his skills and educating the public on how K9s keep the community safe.

Maverick will spend his retirement as Sergeant Rinschler’s family pet, the press release concludes.
