The Idaho Steelheads fell into an early hole in Game 1 of the Mountain Division Finals and never recovered as the Kansas City Mavericks took the best-of-seven series opener 4-2 on Saturday in Independence, Missouri.

The Mavericks, who won the Brabham Cup for the best regular season record, scored their first goal with just over five minutes left in the first period and led 4-0 just over five minutes into the second period.

Patrick Kudla and Jake Murray both had third period goals for Idaho to cut the deficit. Idaho goalie Bryan Thomson stopped 29 of 33 shots he faced.

Game 2 is Sunday afternoon in Missouri.
