Appeal filed in negligence suit against Columbia Memorial Hospital
The verdict in a $100 million civil lawsuit against Columbia Memorial Hospital is being appealed. In March, a Multnomah County Circuit Court jury ruled in favor of the Astoria hospital in a case involving a baby born in 2017 who has permanent neurological damage.

Baldwin steps down from Warrenton City Commission
WARRENTON — City Commissioner Mark Baldwin has stepped down from the City Commission to spend more time with his grandson and focus on his construction business. “On top of that, I want more people involved in it — I’ve always said that. Nobody should ever sit there and stagnate for, you know, eight or 10 years … I can always come back down the road,” he said. “But I’d like to get some younger people involved and see where they can take the direction of the city.”
Astoria hopes to better regulate code violations
A new code compliance specialist for Astoria hopes to educate business and property owners about code violations. Victoria Sage joined the city’s Community Development Department in November in a newly created role designed to bolster the city’s ability to regulate code violations. Sage, who grew up on the North Coast, previously worked as a small-business owner and as a planner for Clatsop County.
In One Ear: 'There's healing there'
In early April, two Astorians, Brad Pietzyk (left) and Sean Davis (right), both U.S. Army combat veterans with service-related issues, set off on a 1,300-mile round trip drive from Astoria to the Owyhee Canyonlands, where they recently arrived. They want to “show how veterans are a priceless resource,” Davis said, and to advocate for land conservation.
Warrenton approves new budget and water, sewer and recycling rate increases
WARRENTON — The City Commission voted on Tuesday night to adopt a $67.8 million budget for the fiscal year beginning in July. The spending plan is an increase from the previous $64.4 million budget approved by the city for this fiscal year.
Flag retirement set for Friday
The Astoria chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is holding an American flag retirement, led by flag chairwoman Evelyn Laughman, at 1 p.m. Friday, which is Flag Day, at the Fort Stevens historical area. The event is open to the public.
