Rain deficit overcome by end of April soaking rain

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The storm system that moved through the region late Monday into Tuesday morning led to a soaking rain across North Alabama. That soaking rain is responsible for many areas ending the month at or above average on rainfall.

Above is a look at the monthly rain totals from Decatur, Huntsville and Muscle Shoals.

Monthly rain totals across the area ranged from four to nearly 6.5 inches. Before Monday’s rain event, Huntsville had a rain deficit of nearly two inches. Huntsville ended April with 6.04 inches, Muscle Shoals received nearly 6.50 inches and Decatur nearly 4.30 inches.

Huntsville ended the month of April warmer than average with a monthly temperature of 64 degrees. This was about one degree above average. The monthly temperature factors in both the highs and the lows.

For record-keeping purposes, the spring season includes the months of March, April and May. So far this season, Huntsville has observed 10.62 inches of rainfall which is just under four-tenths of an inch above normal if the season were to end.

In Alabama, tornadoes can form any month of the year but they are most common during the spring and fall Season.

This year, April was quiet aside from the start of the month when two tornadoes formed. The EF0 and EF1 tornadoes were associated with a strong line of storms pushing through the region.

When looking at specific weather alerts, three tornado warnings and four severe thunderstorm warnings were issued. Throughout the month, some sub-severe storms did produce strong winds heavy rain and small hail.
