A handful of Southern Maryland Athletic Conference lacrosse teams competing in their respective Maryland state quarterfinal contests on Wednesday evening and the results were largely unfavorable for the group as only one team prevailed.

The Huntingtown High School boys lacrosse team earned a gritty, 6-5 victory over visiting Manchester Valley on Wednesday evening in the 2A state quarterfinals. Jackson Taylor and Johnny Hollinshead each scored once for the Hurricanes in the fourth quarter and midfielder Darius Thomas controlled the final 30 seconds with a possession to seal the victory.

While the Huntingtown (17-1) boys advanced to the state semifinals this weekend against either Chesapeake or Hereford, the Northern boys saw their season come to an end on May 15 when the Patriots fell to host Linganore 10-7. Calvert’s boys also saw their season come to an end on Wednesday when the Cavaliers were upended by visiting Liberty 13-5.

Neither of the two SMAC girls lacrosse teams advanced to the state semifinals. Huntingtown suffered a 14-3 setback to visiting Glenelg on Wednesday, while Calvert lost to visiting Middletown 12-9 that same evening in Prince Frederick. The Northern-Wootton girls lacrosse semifinal game was postponed to Thursday evening in Owings.
