HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Ala Wai Canal hosted a new sea visitor earlier last month.

According to The Genki Ala Wai Project, the sea puppy was spotted in front of the Ritz Carlton Waikiki test site.

It’s located between Kalaimoku St and Launiu St.

The Genki Ala Wai Project is a nonprofit group under the Hawaii Exemplary State Foundation.

Their goal is to empower the community to work together to restore the ecosystem in the Ala Wai Canal after years of a toxic environment.

They have since used bioremediation technology to make the Ala Wai Canal fishable and swimmable.

Since 2019, they have made and tossed over 100,000 Genki Balls, and hope to have the canal restored by 2026.
