Recent townhall meeting highlights updates to Chinatown security

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Honolulu Mayor Blangiardi held his 5th townhall meeting Thursday night as part of a series of townhalls to benefit the community.

This one was held at the Blaisdell Center and covered the greater Honolulu area community.

The mayor was joined once again by a large number of department heads, who answered questions on everything from noise and traffic to potholes and crime.

One area given a lot of attention tonight was Chinatown where city officials said they’re making great strides.

They highlighted the new video surveillance system, adding that seven cameras are already up and they hope to have 52 total up and running by the end of the year.

“These cameras are massive upgrade compared to 2000 it’ll have 360 capability night capability and have lights and sirens as well,” said Krishna Jayaram, City Deputy Managing Director.

Jayaram added they will have human eyes looking over monitors and hope to implement artificial intelligence as well to help monitor and crime being committed in the area.
