The completion of the defueling at Red Hill is celebrated with a transfer of authority

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Joint Task Force-Red Hill says they have completed their mission of safely defueling the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility months ahead of schedule.

They say they have removed 104,703,57 gallons of fuel from the facility, roughly six months ahead of schedule.

A ceremony was held in honor of the achievement Thursday afternoon.

The ceremony is said to mark the official transfer of authority from JTF-RH to the newly established Navy Closure Task Force-Red Hill as they assume full responsibility for the facility and it’s closure.

They say going forward, the Department of Defense will transition the main effort from Defueling to Closure and Long-term Environmental Remediation.
