CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (WROC) — In a marathon game with two weather delays that took nearly five hours to complete, the Honeoye Falls-Lima boys lacrosse team took down Pal-Mac 16-11 to win their second straight sectional title and their third in the last four years.

“I’ve never dealt with a game like this. I like to see in Section V how long the longest game is because this has to be up there for one of them. This was what? 5 hours? This was forever,” said HF-L senior Drew Angelo, who was named the Tournament MVP. “We had guys cramping in the locker room it was a lot. But we just kept listening to our coach. He just kept telling us to stay ready. Keep drinking water and be ready to go. We came out ready to go.”

Grady Goodberlet scored all four of his goals in the first half to help the Cougars take a 10-6 lead at the halftime break. But that wouldn’t be the only break of the game.

HF-L scored two more goals before lightning struck in the area, delaying the game for more than 80 minutes. The game restarted at approximately 1:40 p.m. The Cougars scored three quick goals before Pal-Mac answered. The Red Raiders scored the final goal of the third quarter and the first four of the fourth to turn a 15-6 deficit into just a 15-11 game with 7:23 remaining in the game.

However, lightning struck once again, sending both teams into the locker rooms for about 1 hour and 40 minutes.

When the two teams returned to play, Angelo won the opening faceoff the Cougars held onto the ball for several minutes. The Red Raiders committed a penalty in the process, and HF-L scored an open net goal with 1:31 left to secure the win.

“Momentum is a blessing and a curse. If you’re on the right side of it, momentum is fantastic. The second rain delay there might have been a blessing for us,” said HF-L head coach Eric Goodberlet. “Pal-Mac had a tremendous amount of momentum and had gone on a 5-goal run. They had momentum going in, we were able to regroup. Came back out and we were able to kill 7 minutes of the clock there.”

Angelo had a game-high five goals for the Cougars. Goodberlet had four, Marco Vengoechea had three, Mathew Brassie had two, and Patrick Donahoe and Quinn Kailbourne each had one. Chase Perryman dished out five assists while Jason Bennett made six saves in net. Angelo also won 24 of 30 faceoffs.

Jackson Dennie led Pal-Mac with four goals. Keagan Hoesterey and Max Hill each had three, while Branden Thomas had a goal. Peyton Lich made 21 saves in net for Pal-Mac.

The game ended at 3:52 p.m. and took nearly five hours to complete. The game started at 11:00 a.m.

HF-L (17-2) will play Lake Shore/Silver Creek on Wednesday to reach the regional round of the state tournament.

Pal-Mac suffered their only loss of the year and finished with a 17-1 record.
