HOMEWOOD, Ala. ( WIAT ) — The former finance director for Homewood was arrested after being accused of stealing funds totaling in the six figures from the city, according to court records.

Robert Burgett, 63, was arrested April 9 at his home in Helena and charged with aggravated theft by deception. At the time, police said he had been arrested after “irregularities in the movement of city funds” were reported.

According to an affidavit filed in Jefferson County, Burgett’s arrest came after he was accused of stealing over $100,000 in a process that was “committed by deception” on March 27. This date was four days before Burgett was set to retire after nearly six years as finance director for the city.

“Allegations of the misuse of city funds are always disturbing,” Homewood Mayor Patrick McClusky said in a statement to the Homewood Star last week . “When suspicious transactions were noticed, we quickly and appropriately notified authorities of what we found and took appropriate steps to freeze any questionable disbursements.”

Burgett was released from the Jefferson County Jail Monday after posting $500,000 bond and is now enrolled in a court-mandated GPS monitoring program.

He is set for a settlement docket on June 17.
