MMIP Walk In Brockton
Attendees participated in a walk/march dedicated to raising awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and People in Brockton Friday, May 3. Brockton School hosted activities dedicated to raising awareness for MMIW/P over the past week. Organizer Angeline Cheek told the Northern Plains Independent that Dakota spiritual leader Dylan Youpee spoke to youth about the connection awareness walks have to Native culture and shared songs. Veteran Brandon Martell spoke to students about how to handle and take care of the eagle staff and flags. “I wanted to empower, encourage and let the students know that their voice matters,” Cheek said. “We continue to raise MMIW/P awareness to show younger generations safety protocols and to help send prayers to the grieving families/friends because it impacts Indian Country because we all know someone that is hurting from this MMIW/P epidemic.”
Froid/Lake Boys Take Fourth At Fairview
Froid/Lake’s boys struck for 60 points to capture fourth-place honors in the team standings at the Fairview Invitational on Wednesday, May 1. Mason Dethman was a double-winner with a time of 12.22 seconds in the 100 and 24.16 seconds in the 200. The senior placed second in the shot put at 42-11.

CHS Junior Budurean Heads Home To Romania
Seventeen year old junior Florian Budurean has been living in Culbertson with Cassandra and Eric Bergum and their family and attending Culbertson High School this year as part of a year long foreign exchange program. Budurean said he qualified for the program after winning a scholarship contest in his home region of Banat in Romania. “The Bergums chose me,” he told the Community News, adding, “they are the best people and I am very grateful.”
Culbertson Takes Part In Fairview Meet
Culbertson accounted for 28 points in the girls’ division and 29 points in the boys’ division during the Fairview Invitational track meet on Wednesday, May 1. Destiny Thompson came through with a second-place showing in the javelin with a mark of 107-0. The senior placed fourth in the shot put at 29-1 and fifth in the 100 at 14.27 seconds.
Three Bainville Athletes Place First At Wolf Point
The Bainville Bulldogs came away with three firstplace awards during the Gene Nelson Memorial Invitational track meet held in Wolf Point on Friday, May 3. Elsie Wilson was a double- winner for Bainville’s girls. The junior finished first in the 100-meter dash at 13.78 seconds and first in the 300-meter hurdles at 50.27 seconds. Wilson also took third in the triple jump with a mark of 30-11 and fourth in the long jump with a mark of 15-3.

Senior Bronc Bilquist Is Headed To Texas
Bainville High School senior Bronc Bilquist told the Community News that he’s planing on heading to Kilgore College, in eastern Texas, a few hours from Dallas. The 19 year old said he plans to pursue a nine month certification program for specialization in corrosion technology. The program will prepare him to carry out corrosion work at the technician level. Bilquist said he will be traveling with pal Reid Anderson, who will also be studying at Kilgore. “I’m really looking forward to tacos,” Bilquist said.
Bainville Competes At Glendive Track Meet
Bainville High School’s girls accounted for 21 points at the large Glendive Shriners’ track meet on Friday, April 26. Elsie Wilson came through with a best of 16-11 in the long jump for second place. The junior placed fourth in the triple jump at 34-1, fourth in the 100 at 13.05 and fourth in the 200 at 27.45.
Culbertson School, RCSO Respond To Social Media Threat
The Culbertson School was made aware of a threatening social media post Wednesday, April 24. School administrators issued the following statement April 29: “In the evening hours the school administration was made aware of a threat made on social media indicating potential harm toward others in school. School administration immediately began working with the Roosevelt County Sheriff’s [Office]. Within hours on Wednesday evening the Roosevelt Sheriff’s [Office] determined that the social media account was a fake and made by another individual. This determination along with other factors led deputies and administration to deem it safe to hold school on Thursday, April 25. Two deputies were present at the school on Thursday, April 25, from 7 a.m. until after 9 p.m.
Commissioners Host Call On Fertilizer Plant
The Roosevelt County Commissioners hosted an informational meeting with Cyan H2, a Montana based LLC that includes the Eastern Montana Fertilizer Company, regarding a new fertilizer plant proposed east of Culbertson, south of U.S. Highway 2 and west of County Road 1013. The site identified for purchase includes over 400 acres. Letters of support for the project have been signed by Commissioner Gordon Oelkers and Wolf Point Mayor Chris Dschaak.
Culbertson Track Athletes Compete At Lambert
Culbertson’s track athletes struck for 28 points in the boys’ division and 24 in the girls’ events during the Richey/Lambert Invitational held on Thursday, April 25. Destiny Thompson put together a strong meet for the Cowgirls. The senior captured second place in the javelin with a mark of 106-1 and took third in the shot put with a best of 32-4.
