More than 40 kinds of poinsettias fill one holiday shop, and some of them aren’t red or white at all. That alone made me look twice. The same place has been spraying fake snow onto real trees since 1964. Every winter, the greenhouses glow with twinkle lights from floor...

The Democratic Senate victories in Texas and Kansas on Tuesday night were about more than just turning two red states blue — which, to be sure, is historic enough. They also signal the rise of a new kind of Democratic politics in the late Trump era — a more explicitly religious one.

The hotly-contested race for Kansas governor was still too close to call by Friday afternoon, making Kansas one of just two states with gubernatorial races not yet finalized. But late returns have so far broken for Democratic state Sen. Cindy Holscher , who earlier this week claimed victory over Republican Senate President Ty Masterson. Holscher holds a 7,046 vote lead over Masterson, according to unofficial results . The results have Kansas Republicans bracing for what would be a stunning upset. National Republicans widely viewed Kansas as one of their best opportunities to flip a governorship this cycle and were banking on Masterson succeeding term-limited Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly. “The numbers look like it will be difficult to overcome — for Sen. Masterson to come out on top,” said Mike Kuckelman, a former chair of the Kansas Republican Party. However, Kuckelman cautioned that the race had not yet been called. Kansans are still awaiting the results of a legally-required close-race audit conducted by local officials in all 105 counties at the direction of Secretary of State Scott Schwab. “Until the audit’s done and until all the ballots are counted, nobody really knows that,” he said. “So I’d wait for the official

Rev. Hamilton is going to Washington. But how often will he come back? Kansans have reasons to wonder, having just booted Sen. Roger Marshall from office Tuesday, in part because of how absent he seemed from the state he represented. Few believed Marshall was rushing back on weekends to the one-bedroom hunting shack he kept in rural Stafford County. His million-dollar vacation home in Sarasota, Florida, seemed a more likely destination when he wasn’t in Washington. Even if Senator-elect Adam Hamilton, who defeated Marshall, wanted to spend his free time on a white-sand Florida beach, he has a practical reason to come home. He has a church to run — and not just any church, but the largest United Methodist congregation in the country, the Leawood-based Church of the Resurrection, with 25,000 members. And he intends to keep running it, at least part-time. Resurrection laid out Hamilton’s plans in a detailed announcement Wednesday. In the short term, Hamilton will attend Senate orientation in Washington, then take a previously planned two-week vacation with his wife, LaVon. He’ll return to the pulpit Nov. 29 and continue leading services through Christmas. “I can hardly wait to return to a regular preaching schedule for
Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach has lost reelection, the Associated Press projected, denying him a second term as the state’s top lawyer. Kobach lost to Chris Mann, a former prosecutor and police officer who nearly beat him in 2024. Mann leads with 50.6 percent of the vote to Kobach’s 49.4 percent, or a lead of…
If any one statement sums up the colossal miscalculation underlying Kansas Republicans’ historic wipeout Tuesday night, it’s a single social media post from Senate President Ty Masterson. You might remember Masterson as the GOP leader who hoped to succeed Democrat Laura Kelly as governor. He ran against fellow state senator Cindy Holscher, who appeared poised […]
As regular readers of my column know, I have quite the appetite for irony. And irony doesn’t get any more delicious than when someone tampers with voting rules to try to gain a partisan advantage, gets overruled in court, and then the original rule turns out to be their last, best hope for political survival. Enter Senate President Ty Masterson, stage right. As of this moment, Masterson, the Republican candidate for governor, trails his Democratic opponent Sen. Cindy Holscher by a paltry 5,578 votes out of more than 1.1 million cast. The only plausible scenario in which Masterson can overtake Holscher is if late-delivered mail votes break his way. The irony here is that if Masterson had had his way, those votes he now needs would have ended up in dumpsters behind election offices across the state, uncounted, unrecorded and unceremoniously forgotten. A little background: In 2017 the Legislature, by a bipartisan and near-unanimous vote, passed a bill allowing ballots to be counted if they’re postmarked by Election Day and delivered to the election office by the Friday after the election. At the time, it was seen mostly as an accommodation to voters in sparsely populated rural sections of Kansas,

For decades, Kansas represented a predictable place on the country’s political map. Republicans consistently won the Electoral College, Democrats struggled to gain votes statewide and federal contests rarely attracted national attention. It was a red safe state. That changed on Tuesday. After months of record-breaking spending, nonstop advertising from...
