All-way stop coming to NC 111 intersection

RICHLANDS — On Tuesday, Nov. 3, the intersection of NC 111 and Haw Branch Road was scheduled to be converted to an all-way stop. The intersection is just past the Duplin-Onslow County line in the Richlands area. According to a press release, the N.C. Department of Transportation installed new stop signs, flashers and pavement markings at the intersection, although the work is weather-dependent and could be rescheduled. “Over the last few years, NCDOT has implemented other mitigation strategies at this intersection including improvements to sight distance by clearing vegetation,” the press release stated. “Due to continued safety concerns, an all-way stop is warranted. NCDOT recommends an all-way stop only after a thorough evaluation of the intersection including analysis of traffic volumes, crash history, sight distance and a field investigation.“ According to NCDOT, an all-way stop is “a proven, cost-effective measure designed to enhance intersection safety and reduce the risk of serious crashes.” A 2023 NCDOT study showed that at nearly 350 rural intersections, all-way stop conversions reduce fatalities and serious injuries by 92%. Drivers should use caution when traveling near the area while the safety improvements are underway.

Triangle gas stations have received complaints for overcharging customers

North Carolina’s 41 cent a gallon gas tax is suspended through Nov. 30, in an effort to lower the cost for consumers at the pump. N.C. Fuel Check was announced as part of an effort to make sure gas station operators are charging appropriately following the suspension of the tax. Attorney General Jeff Jackson wants to use the tool to make sure savings are passed along to the consumer, The News & Observer previously reported. More than 450 people have filed complaints through the N.C. Fuel Check Portal as of Tuesday, Oct. 20, according to Jackson’s office. The tax won’t be levied against new gasoline deliveries, but it may take a bit for savings to fully hit the market, and they may not be a full 41 cents. Studies have shown some of the windfall remains with gas stations. As of Oct. 21, the average cost of gas in the country sits at $4.26, compared to $3.57 in North Carolina, according to the AAA. Where are people complaining? Jackson’s office provided a list of complaints received through the N.C. Fuel Check portal as of 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
