Youth-infused Yeti look for bounce-back season in 2024 with prospect of playing for national title on home turf
After winning the Upstate Division title, and punching their ticket to the NABLL National Championship in 2022, the Utica Yeti took a small step backward losing in the division semifinals in 2023. With their first season in existence set to begin on Friday, Utica is younger, faster, and looking to get back to competing for a national title, which the league announced just this week would be played for at the Utica University Nexus Center in August.

Canastota, N.Y. — Five members of the International Boxing Hall of Fame’s Class of 2024 were on hand Friday to take part in the hall’s annual fist-casting event. Michael Moorer, Ricky Hatton, Ivan Calderon, Jane Couch and Ana Maria Torres had molds made of their fists for plaster casts to be created. The fist casting has been part of the Hall of Fame’s annual Induction Weekend since the first induction in 1990.

Oriskany baseball looking forward to state final four experience
ORISKANY — Noah Narolis joked he might have lost consciousness in reaching a big milestone with the Oriskany baseball team. Narolis, the Oriskany senior third baseman and captain, smashed the first pitch he saw to lead off the sixth inning of the squad’s eventual lopsided win in the Class D regional final over Deposit-Hancock on Saturday. The blast to left field had little trouble clearing the fence at Windsor High School.
International Boxing Hall of Fame inductions set this weekend; Syracuse grad among honorees
Thirty-five years after the International Boxing Hall of Fame first opened its doors in Canastota, another class of inductees will enter the hall this weekend. The Hall of Fame officially opened its doors in the summer of 1989. The next year, legends such as Willie Pep, Archie Moore, Muhammad Ali and hometown hero Carmen Basilio came to Central New York as part of the initial class of inductees.

The Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs escaped jams in the eighth and ninth innings at Murnane Field Friday and defeated the Utica Blue Sox 8-7 as both teams opened league play. The DiamondDawgs shut the Blue Sox out over the final four innings after tying the score in the top of the sixth, and broke that tie with a run in the eighth.
