HOBOKEN, NJ - Is the Hoboken police cracking down on electric vehicles on sidewalks?

According to the Hoboken Police Department, earlier this month a 28-year-old man from Jersey City was issued a summons and had his moped towed after he was seen by an officer riding it on the sidewalk for a full block in the area of Hudson Street and Hudson Place.

Sergeant Ryan Houghton spotted the rider, later identified by police as Jorge Espinoza-Alemeida, and commanded him to stop. But despite turning his head and making eye contact with the sergeant, Espinoza-Alemeida continued riding and fled south on Hudson Street, police say.

Police Officer Ramon Calderon was directing traffic nearby and stopped the moped on a bicycle path near the intersection of Observer Highway and Washington Street.

Espinoza-Almeida was issued a complaint for obstructing the administration of the law. He was then released on the scene after the police took away his moped.

Electric vehicles riding on sidewalks has been a frustrating issue for many Hoboken residents.

In March, Mayor Ravi Bhalla signed an ordinance , narrowly passed by the City Council, that would require commercial e-bike delivery riders to be licensed, wear a vest, and take a quiz on road safety laws.

The ordinance is expected to come into effect in June.
