HOBBS, New Mexico (KMID/KPEJ)- Hobbs downtown is getting a face lift! This is all in an effort to draw more community engagement to the downtown area. The renovation would include more locally owned businesses, as well as more retail shopping and restaurants.

“My team has come up with a plan to expand Ship Plaza. To give us the ability to have more downtown events, create an environment down there that people will want to come to downtown, shop, bring their family–some people that want to come down in terms of dining,” said Mayor Sam Cobbs.

This is all possible with no additional taxes or cost to the community. “The money will come from our existing reserves, and they’ll come from the foundations funds. So, there is no increase in taxes and there is impact on the public in terms of financial impact,” said Mayor Cobbs.

This project comes after receiving feedback from the community and implementing those changes to reflect the needs of Hobbs citizens. “We connected with 444 individuals in Hobbs in order to hear their voices and to understand what they want to see happen and we are really excited about some of those results,” said David Reed of the JF Maddox Foundation.

The renovation is expected to be completed within a year.
