SF College sends Habitat house to High Springs
A brand-new house left Santa Fe College’s Charles R. Perry Construction Institute on Thursday morning, headed to High Springs for a family in need. The Habitat for Humanity home was taken to a site donated by High Springs, where the family will be able to pay for it with an affordable mortgage and sweat equity.
Gainesville man receives 30-year sentence for violent courtroom attack on his defense attorney
A long-awaited trial of a man accused of punching his defense attorney in an Alachua County courtroom in November, fracturing his skull, wrapped up this week. Obadiah Dillard, who is on trial for aggravated battery, appeared in Alachua County Courthouse on Monday via TV screen, having been isolated from the main courtroom where the judge and Dillard’s attorney sat. A jury quickly found Dillard guilty on one count of aggravated battery against defense attorney Eric Atria and was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
Former Florida football star Tony Joiner sentenced in girlfriend's 2016 homicide
Tony Joiner, a former University of Florida football star player arrested in his girlfriend's 2016 murder, will spend more than two decades behind bars. Lee Circuit (Florida) Judge Nicholas Thompson adjudicated Joiner guilty Monday and sentenced him to 25 years in prison after Joiner, 37, pleaded no contest to one count of second-degree murder in the slaying of Heyzel Obando, 26.

Six Gators Invited to Tryout for 2024 U.S. Women’s U20 National Team
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Six members of the Florida lacrosse program were invited to tryout for the 2024 U.S. Women's U20 National Team, as USA Lacrosse announced Tuesday. Theresa Bragg, Kaitlyn Davies, Emma LoPinto, Gianna Monaco, Ava Tighe were the current Florida players selected, while incoming freshman Gabbi Koury was also invited to tryout.
Newberry moves forward with urban service changes
The city of Newberry’s planning and zoning board unanimously approved a plan to amend the city’s urban service area (USA) to follow existing property lines on Monday. The USA is the part of the city in which development is encouraged. Outside that area, the city has reserved the land for agriculture and green spaces. The zone is intended to allow Newberry to grow responsibly at its center while preventing urban sprawl, according to Mayor Jordan Marlowe.

Santa Fe College readies new charter school
Santa Fe College will start its own charter high school this August, and the first cohort of 75 students has already been selected, coming from schools across Alachua County. The Academy of Science and Technology will serve high schoolers who want to pursue Career and Technical Education (CTE), specifically in health sciences and information technology. The students will have the opportunity to graduate with their high school diploma, an associate of science degree and at least two industry certifications—all without debt.

Fisher House of Gainesville: A Home Away from Home for Caretakers of Sick Veterans
The Fisher House is a 20-room home for caregivers of sick veterans that was donated to the VA by the Fisher House Foundation in 2014. The house serves the largest VA healthcare system in the US, the Malcom Randall Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, which serves about 177,000 veterans and provided 1.9 million outpatient visits in 2021. Veterans make up about 6.4% of the US adult population and about 7.7% of the adult population in Florida. The Fisher House allows military families to avoid staying in costly hotels or leaving loved ones alone during their care. Everything the VA needed to operate the house was donated, including silverware. There are just under 100 Fisher Houses across the world today and more are on the way.

Gators Add Transfer Sarunchana Rattanasin
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Florida women's golf head coach Emily Glaser announced the addition of Sarunchana Rattanasin to the program on Wednesday. The 2022 Sun Belt Individual Champion and Freshman of the Year will join the program in the fall after spending the last two seasons at Georgia Southern. She played in all 11 tournaments her freshman season, appearing in the lineup each time.
