HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — The Wesleyan Christian Academy community is mourning the passing of Sarah Haynes, a beloved chorus and drama teacher who fought against breast cancer.

Haynes began her journey at Wesleyan Christian Academy in Aug. 2016, bringing her passion for drama and chorus to the forefront of the school.

“She was one of the people who made you feel confident even when you didn’t feel confident about yourself,” said Erin Finan, a senior at Wesleyan. “She’d be backstage … cheering us on.”

Beyond her role as an educator, Haynes was known for her advocacy for students and her dedication to producing a yearly musical.

Maddy McPherson served as her student teacher during her senior year.

“We had a lot of students who had never sung before … and she brought a new love to them through the arts, which I think is so beautiful,” McPherson said.

Haynes’ battle with breast cancer, which began in December, was one she faced with unwavering determination and strength.

“She was a fighter, and she was going to fight it. She was going to be strong and courageous, and it was going to be something where she gave it all she had,” said Kyle Auman, a teacher at WCA.

As the Wesleyan community navigates this period of mourning, the school is calling for prayers for Haynes’ husband and their two young children.

Plans are underway to establish a memorial fund in honor of Haynes.

“The legacy that she’s left for all of us from a faith standpoint and from an education standpoint and from just a loving friend … will live forever,” Auman said.
