Five Things to Do This Weekend
Attend Smokey's birthday party, watch burros race the hills, see wool become yarn, find joy at a three-day party, and shop for mom at an Indigenous Art Fair. Many of us wear wool, but few know how it gets from a sheep’s coat to the yarn that makes our cozy sweaters. At the Bosque Redondo Fiber Fair near Fort Sumner, learn about this process through sheep shearing demonstrations, workshops, and ranger talks on Saturday. Six experts from Las Arañas Spinners and Weavers Guild will demonstrate many of the wool-curing processes, from shearing to washing, skirting, and carding, using the memorial’s resident Navajo Churro sheep. Fair attendees can also check out the site’s exhibitions and take an audio tour on its interpretive trail. The fiber fair is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Fuel your passion for Route 66 at these museums. THE CANARY-YELLOW 1930 Ford Model A Five-Window Coupe, perched high atop a pole in front of the Route 66 Auto Museum in Santa Rosa, seems ready to roll through the clouds. Instead, this eye-catching car advertises the museum’s collection of more than 30 vintage vehicles, gas pumps, and loads of memorabilia. “We’ve become good friends with people from all over the world who are making the Route 66 trip,” says Anna Cordova, who opened the museum more than 20 years ago with her husband, James “Bozo” Cordova, a passionate restorer of vintage cars. “We take the time to talk to people. People are so happy when they leave.”

Classic Tracks: The Fireballs’ “Sugar Shack”
In August 1958, George Tomsco was facing a dilemma that many high school graduates face: what should he do with the rest of his life? Tomsco was the guitar player in the Raton, N.M. rock ‘n’ roll band The Fireballs. The band got its name at a high school talent show after performing a flawless rendition of Jerry Lee Lewis’ “Great Balls of Fire.” The recent success of his band in his hometown gave him the idea that he could make a career in the music business, but he had no idea how someone from a small town New Mexico could make that dream a reality. So, like many young men his age, he went off to college in hopes of training for a career. One night, while Tomsco was in his dorm room listening to an acetate of The Fireballs that his high school band teacher had recorded, a fellow student walked by his room and asked who the band was. When the student found out it was George and The Fireballs, he said they were good and should go to Clovis, N.M. to record with Buddy Holly’s producer, Norman Petty.

Tucumcari Is Going Back to the Future
Tucumcari’s rich traditions propel the town forward. SINCE 1936, the Odeon Theatre has been a main attraction in downtown Tucumcari, a former railroad town that cruised to fame during Route 66’s heyday. Texas Panhandle Dairy Queens Are Auctioning Off Their Contents
It was recently announced that many Dairy Queens were closing across the Texas Panhandle and Texas. These DQ locations have been a staple in these small Texas towns. A piece of childhood for many residents of these small Texas towns has just come to an end as their local Dairy Queen has shuttered its doors. If you grew up in a small town in Texas, Dairy Queen was the place for ice cream. Whether you enjoyed a dip cone, Dilly Bar, or Blizzard, those memories likely include the experience of getting a Country Basket and dipping those steak fingers in gravy, watching it drip down your hand.
