Improvements Coming to Sidewalks in Hickory Flat

Sidewalk improvements are coming to Hickory Road and Stringer Road.

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners unanimously voted May 21 to award a $3.6 million contract to Sol Construction, LLC, for the Hickory Road and Stringer Road sidewalk improvements project.

Hickory Road runs between New Light Road and East Cherokee Drive in southeast Cherokee County. Stringer Road runs between Hickory Road and Highway 140.

Along Hickory Road between East Cherokee Drive and New Light Road, and along the north end of Stringer Road, there are several sidewalk gaps on both sides of the roadway, according to county documents. This project will fill those gaps.

Residential development over the last decade has included the installation of curb, gutter and sidewalk along most of the road, but there are still some places without sidewalks.

The $3,699,982.90 standard construction services agreement will allow the county to complete the sidewalk, and also includes the addition of curb, gutter, guard rails, retaining walls and storm drainage along the road.

The project will be funded with Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funding.

Hickory Road is maintained by Holly Springs, so the county and Holly Springs entered into an intergovernmental agreement in February 2021 to share the cost of this project. Through this agreement, the city is reimbursing the county for all costs for right-of-way and easements and all construction costs for the portions of the project located on the city-maintained sections of Hickory Road, according to county documents.

The project is expected to be completed by May 2025, according to the county.
