    MN-Hibbing punches ticket to Region XIII Tournament

    INT’L. FALLS—The Minnesota North-Hibbing baseball team punched their ticket into the Region XIII Tournament with a 9-6 victory over Minnesota North-Rainy River in an MCAC play-in game Tuesday.

    Juna Bess started for the Cardinals, tossing 4.1 innings. He allowed eight hits, struck out four and walked one. Joss Parantala worked two innings, giving up two hits and striking out one. Owen Hindermann worked the final .2 innings to close out the game.

    Minnesota North-Hibbing started the scoring in the first inning as Conor Gilreath hit an RBI single, then Kris Rivera hit a sacrifice fly. Bruce Slygh tripled home the third run.

    The Cardinals added to their lead with two more runs in the second, with one run scoring on a Voyageur error, and an RBI base hit by Hindermann.

    Minnesota North-Rainy River got one of those runs back in the third on as Talarico walked, then eventually scored on a Minnesota North-Hibbing error.

    The Voyageurs got two more runs in the third to make it 5-3 when Talarico hit a two-run triple.

    The Cardinals got a two-run home run from Gilreath in the fourth to take a 7-3 lead, but Minnesota North-Rainy River got an RBI single from Talerico in the fifth to make it 7-4.

    Minnesota North-Hibbing got two more insurance runs in the seventh on an RBI double by Slygh and an RBI groundout off the bat of Jacob Madril, but the Voyageurs put up a mild threat in the seventh.

    Becker and Talarico both singled, but the Cardinals got a force out at second.

    With runners on first and third and two out, Johnson hit an RBI groundout off of Hindermann, who then got the next hitter to groundout to end the game.

    Schmitz started for Minnesota North-Rainy River, working two innings of five-hit ball. He fanned two and walked one. Hubble tossed 4.1 innings, allowing six hits. He struck out five and walked two. Anderson tossed .2 innings, striking out one.

    The Region XIII Tournament begins today in St. Cloud.
