HIBBING—The Rock Ridge boys and Hibbing girls came away winners at the 68th annual Doc Savage Meet held Saturday at Cheever Field in Dr. Ben Owens Stadium.

The Wolverines won the meet with 221.5 points, followed by Hibbing with 170.5. Mesabi East was third at 84, Hermantown 79, Ely 63, Chisholm 61 and Mountain Iron-Buhl six.

According to Rock Ridge coach Ryan Malich, it was a total-team effort that got the win.

“It was a great effort all of the way around,” Malich said. “We’re a team that doesn’t necessarily pay attention to what place that we finish in. We’re constantly looking at times, and how we compare to ourselves.

“This was a good day. There weren’t PRs across the board, but you have to factor in the conditions and things like that. I thought the boys put a great effort in. Attitude was everything. They were supportive of each other, so the attitude and effort was amazing today.”

Rock Ridge got eight first-place finishes with individual titles going to Andrew Wilson in the 100 (11:53); Jackson Kendall the 400 (53.15) to earn the William Nadeau Award as the top 400 runner; Casey Aune the 800 (2:09.25); Luke Hecimovich the 110 hurdles (15.95); Rory Cope-Robinson the 300 hurdles (44.69).

The 4x200 team of Wilson, Leo Johnson, Nolin Cope-Robinson, Max Williams ran a time of 1:31.36; the 4x400 team of Ryan Herberg, Tristan Peterson, Rory Cope-Robinson and Max Williams had a time of 3:40.44; and 4x800 relay team of Tyler Wudinich, Casey Aune, Kaden Amundson and Kendall had a time of 8:39.43.

“We’ve been running fast times, and we’re on the right track,” Malich said. “We want to make sure that we’re keeping on that track and not seeing a dip in times. In the events where there are dips, we’ll try to evaluate why.

“It didn’t look like there was too much of that to do today.”

The Bluejackets got five firsts from Austin Valento in the pole vault (10-feet-6-inches); Aidan Shepherd in the shot put (51-2) and discus (136-11); Jack Bottoms in the 1600 (4:48.09); and Brady Janezich in the 3200 (10:49.87).

Shepherd took home the Milan Knezovich plague for winning both the shot put and discus.

“Aiden is our first Knezovich winner since Matt Anderson in 2004,” Plese said. “That’s cool that that happened. We’ve been waiting for that. We’ve had some good throwers knocking on the door, but this was the guy kicking the door down.

“He’s putting it together, both shot and disc. Brady had a nice day, looking strong in the two-mile. Jack ran his best mile time. He’s been knocking on the door of going sub-five. He finally got that. That was fun to see, and our pole vaulter came through.”

Mesabi East got two firsts, Evan James in the 200 (23.21), and 4x100 team of Ethan Jacobson, Evan James, Carter Steele and Ethan Murray (45.86).

Chisholm had two first-place finishes, Ethan Lauzen in the high jump (5-10) and Braden Thronson in the long jump (18-6).
