Mermaids, pirates, and clowns, oh my!

Splash Cirkus debuted on Thursday, May 2 at Main Street and Escondido Avenue in Hesperia. The maritime production from Las Vegas will be in the city until Thursday, May 16, bringing a refreshing tempo to the High Desert as temperatures start to warm up this May.

Attendees can expect a fun, whimsical night filled with gut-jiggling laughter and appearances from their favorite aquatic characters at the circus carrousel.

What to expect at Splash Cirkus

There were more people than seats at the grand opening where mermaids, acrobats, a crowd-pleasing clown, and other aquatic performers entertained the family-filled audience.

Rain fell from the center of the stage as breakdancers and jump rope opening acts danced to a techno version of the Pirates of the Caribbean theme song to start the night with their pirated acts.

The show wasn't exactly like the Cirque du Soleil show "O," where the entire stage is replaced by a shallow pool of water. Instead, Splash Cirkus incorporates water elements into its traditional circus performance.

Performers paraded around a centerstage water fountain, and a "real" mermaid fluttered her fin in a life-size fish tank for a Little Mermaid water aerobics session, a crowd favorite.

A juggler from Brazil stole the show as he balanced a seven-ball toss. He even integrated mouth juggling into his act, astounding the audience.

The long, two-hour night will be filled with souvenirs, face-painting, a crowd-engaging clown, and a chance to dance on stage for prizes. I recommend eating before Hesperia's greatest show, however, as a small popcorn bag is $10.
